Coonan slams Telstra on broadband speeds
Thursday, November 30, 2006.
The Federal Communications Minister, Helen Coonan, has lashed out at Telstra for not switching more of its exchanges over to faster broadband.
Senator Coonan says Telstra has only moved to the faster ADSL 2 service at exchanges where the company’s competitors are already offering quicker broadband speeds.
News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch and PBL boss James Packer have both recently criticised broadband speeds in Australia.
Senator Coonan says Telstra has been capping broadband speeds for too long.
She also says claims that Government regulation has stymied consumer access to faster services are false.

Coonan defends broadband speeds
The Communications Minister, Senator Helen Coonan, says Internet speeds in Australia are not as slow as Rupert Murdoch suggests.
Mr Murdoch today labelled Australian broadband Internet speeds a disgrace and said the nation was being left behind.
He called on the Federal Government and Telstra to spend up to $12 billion to improve broadband speeds.
But Senator Coonan says speeds are improving in Australia.
She has also argued not everyone wants to pay for super fast broadband.

Coonan: broadband speed satisfactory
Internet users in most Australian capital cities should be happy with the speed of their broadband connection, Communications Minister Helen Coonan insists.
Australia faces being left behind other countries in the broadband stakes after Telstra pulled the plug on its $4 billion high-speed internet plan.
But Senator Coonan believes that even without the Telstra fibre network Australians living in the major capitals have broadband speeds sufficient for their needs.
Senator Coonan said broadband using the copper network could give sufficiently high speeds.
“That is very good technology and currently no one is complaining about the speeds of broadband in metropolitan areas,” she said.
Helen, the word you should be looking for starts with 'r' and ends with 'n'. In the words from "The Fish Called Wanda" the middle bit is "esig".
